Project Background

PR Water proudly participated in one of the state’s primary infrastructure initiatives, the Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline (FGP). This $983 million project has been designed to address the single-source water supply risk from Awoonga Dam and ensure long-term water security for the Gladstone Area Water Board (GAWB) customers.

The 117 kilometre pipeline will run from the Lower Fitzroy River near Rockhampton to GAWB’s existing network at Yarwun. Encompassing a water treatment plant, reservoirs, and pumping stations at key locations such as Laurel Bank, Alton Downs and Aldoga. McConnell Dowell and BMD Joint Venture (MBJV) were appointed as the construction contractor, and once completion, the pipeline will be owned and managed by GAWB.

The FGP crosses multiple water ways including under Gavial Creek. To achieve the Gavial Creek trenchless crossing, a shaft was constructed for access, but the high-water table and proximity to the creek required continuous dewatering. The extracted groundwater had to be treated to meet environmental standards before it could be discharged. It was PR Water’s responsibility to treat the extracted groundwater to ensure it met local environmental regulations prior to discharge back into the creek.

Gavial Creek Water Quality

Our Solution

PR Water mobilised and commissioned two automated water treatment plants on either side of the creek to meet flow rate requirements to reduce the water table. The treatment system streamlined on-site responsibilities for the client, allowing their focus to remain on the pipeline installation. Each system included a Chemical Dosing Skid and two HB60 Lamella Clarifiers. The systems were configured to regulate pH levels and effectively remove suspended solids from the water, significantly reducing turbidity levels. PR Water provides ongoing support for all of our projects, conducting weekly water quality tests on site and providing Quality Compliance Reports. Our team will also safely provide necessary chemicals to sustain the system’s operation, ensuring strict adherence to water quality standards.

Throughout the pipeline installation, PR Water maintained environmental compliance standards, ensuring all water released into Gavial Creek was correctly treated to meet regulations. Contributing to MBJV’s sustainability commitments and maintaining the natural balance of the creek’s ecosystem, protecting the environment.

PR Water provides bespoke water treatment solutions that uphold environmental integrity and customer satisfaction. We focus on the water treatment while our customers can keep their focus on the project.

PR Water currently has additional water treatment plants operating on other creeks as part of this project.
